“The poems in The Elephant House display a remarkable range, encompassing the autobiographical past, the vividly limned present, and the more timeless zone of the imagination, where the poet encounters historical and mythic figures such as Blake, Goya, Gregor Mendel, and Bluebeard. Carlson can be funny, as when she invents the Greek goddess Pornos, half-sister of Eros, but she is not afraid of ‘seeing the worst made visible’, as she writes in another poem. Often pleasure and fear are not far apart. The book’s third section contains a moving sequence about the life and death of Carlson’s mother, who was also a poet, and a sense of inheritance haunts the volume. About The Author:
Claudia Carlson was born in Bloomington, Indiana and raised in seven college towns. She double-majored in English and Art History at Stony Brook University. She has worked as a quilt designer, cartographer, calligrapher, illustrator, book designer and website designer. She co-founded the writing group River Writers of Manhattan; they had a 15th anniversary reading at the Mercantile Library in 2006. She has studied poetry at the Frost Place and 92nd St. Y. Her work was included in the anthology The Breath of Parted Lips II: Poems from the Robert Frost Place, CavanKerry Press, 2004 and she’s the co-editor of the anthology, The Poet’s Grimm: Twentieth Century Poems from Grimm Fairy Tales, Story Line Press, 2003. She co-authored The Bulgarian Americans in 1990. Divide, The Cream City Review and Gargoyle Magazine have published her photographs. On Sundays, she paints watercolors (see her work at www.claudiagraphics.com). She is a senior book designer at Oxford University Press and lives in New York City with her family.

Straw Mother

I stuffed your head with crumpled anthologies,
fortified your legs with pipe-cleaners
and for a heart, I filled a box with taxi receipts.
Where would you be without eyes—
those bird-cage mirrors that twist & turn?
I stuck cigarettes onto twigs
and lit them on the ends of your arms.
Lips? Can’t see them under the paste
holding your teeth in place.
Don’t ask what I had to roll & pinch
to get your body straight. Straight? As if.
I taped the little-black-dress to your flammable back.
But this isn’t right, you never wore a slip
torn from the news. Or dress, or sling-back shoes
on your narrow footnotes.
Folded your dissertation into origami trousers
sharp enough to crease the silence.
Almost done. What haven’t I done?

 

Pornos: Muse of Hack

Eros had a half-sister
dropped on the wrong side of the river,
little Pornos.

Found and raised by a poor reseller of slightly damaged icons
(the whole family rubbed wax into marble cracks)
she fevered through childhood into ripe days,
offering herself to writers in need of a muse of easy virtue.
She took the emblem of a torn veil.
Her sex, always damp with use, was an ink that never failed.

Her lips—pliable as warm wax—
uttered advice so simple even an impotent poet
produced enough metaphors to fill an ode on commission.

She had legions of patrons:
untried boys, the unemployed, pen-named matrons,
strident politicians and furtive academicians.

She never grew old, she in an eternity of repeats.
Behold marble scrolls inscribed with her wisdom:

The act is the art.
Flattery can wax and wane,
gold in hand the best refrain.

O Pornos, dependable flask of need,
keep inspiring readers and writers
to consume your thin substance with greed,

leaving us all—briefly—satisfied.
